- Is it possible to receive the AmeriCorps Education Award?
Yes. The AmeriCorps Education Award is available to members who qualify.
- I have a student loan; what should I do about that?
You will be assisted in securing loan forbearance or deferment.
- How many hours per week will I work?
You will work a regular 40 hour week.
- Will I be able to go home for Christmas?
Most service sites allow volunteers to take vacation at Christmas; however, some sites must remain open through the holidays. All vacation is arranged with the service site supervisor and should be discussed in advance.
- How many applicants are selected for VSC West?
VSC West usually accepts between 12 and 20 volunteers each year.
- Do I get to choose the type of service I will be involved in and where I will go?
Yes, you will be involved in the ongoing discussion and decision of your service placement.
- Will I receive any assistance with my travel costs to and from the program?
You will be provided a modest relocation stipend at the end of your year of service.
- Can I bring my car?
Yes, you may bring your car. If you need it for work, you will receive a gas allowance.
- Can I have visitors?
Yes, family and friends are welcome to visit for reasonable amounts of time.
- What is the application deadline?
Applications are processed on a 'first come, first served' basis until all positions are filled.
- What is the dress code?
Workplace dress should conform to your individual service site’s standards. You will be advised on this and other type of clothes you will need for the year before you come.
- Will I be able to bring my pet?
No animals are allowed. They may not be brought nor acquired during the year.
- What if I get sick?
You will be provided with health insurance and an allowance for co-pays to cover the costs of medical care.
- Once I get there, do I have any ongoing contact with VSC staff?
Yes. Staff is available via phone and email. They attend all Reflection/support Weekends and regularly visit local communities and service sites.
